Bridging clinical practice, cultural analysis, and ethical technology use to address the mental health challenges of our time.

AI Ethics in Mental Health Care

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence into mental health services demands careful clinical and ethical consideration. I examine how AI tools intersect with therapeutic practice, from chatbots offering crisis support to algorithms predicting mental health outcomes.

My Perspective

AI can enhance access to mental health support, but it cannot replace the nuanced, relational work at the heart of therapy. I advocate for AI as a complement to human care, not a substitute. This means rigorous attention to data privacy, algorithmic bias, informed consent, and the preservation of therapeutic relationships that remain fundamentally human.

Key Questions I Address:

  • Can AI chatbots provide effective crisis intervention, and what are the risks?
  • How do we ensure algorithmic fairness in mental health diagnosis and treatment planning?
  • What regulatory frameworks are needed to protect vulnerable populations?
  • How do therapists maintain ethical boundaries when using digital tools?

Adolescent Development in Digital Contexts

Today's adolescents are navigating identity formation, peer relationships, and emotional development in environments that previous generations never encountered. Social media, gaming communities, and constant connectivity create both opportunities and risks.

My Perspective

Digital spaces are not inherently harmful or beneficial—they are environments that shape development in complex ways. Rather than demonizing technology, I focus on helping young people develop critical thinking skills, emotional regulation, and healthy boundaries. This requires parents, educators, and clinicians to understand these spaces deeply, not superficially.

Topics I Explore:

  • How social media algorithms influence self-perception and comparison
  • The role of online communities in identity exploration and belonging
  • Cyberbullying, cancel culture, and navigating social conflict online
  • Gaming communities: connection, escapism, and problematic use
  • Digital literacy as a protective factor for mental health

School-Based Mental Health Programs

Schools are on the frontlines of the adolescent mental health crisis, yet many lack the resources, training, and frameworks to respond effectively. I design and implement programs that are evidence-based, culturally responsive, and sustainable.

My Perspective

Effective school mental health programs meet students where they are—both physically and developmentally. This means integrating mental health education into the school day, reducing stigma through normalization, and creating pathways to care that feel accessible. Programs must be designed with input from students themselves and adapted to the unique culture of each school community.

Program Components:

  • Universal mental health literacy curricula for all students
  • Small-group interventions for students experiencing specific challenges
  • Faculty and staff training on recognizing and responding to mental health concerns
  • Parent education workshops on supporting adolescent mental health
  • Creating referral pathways to community mental health resources

Technology Integration in Clinical Practice

Therapists increasingly face questions about how to integrate technology into their work—from teletherapy platforms to apps that track symptoms between sessions. These tools can enhance care, but they also introduce new ethical and practical considerations.

My Perspective

Technology should serve the therapeutic relationship, not dictate it. I help clinicians think critically about when and how to use digital tools, always centering the client's needs, preferences, and privacy. This includes navigating informed consent, maintaining boundaries in digital spaces, and recognizing when face-to-face connection is irreplaceable.

Clinical Technology Considerations:

  • Teletherapy best practices and therapeutic presence across screens
  • Using mental health apps as adjuncts to therapy
  • Data privacy and HIPAA compliance in digital tools
  • Managing therapeutic boundaries with text and messaging
  • Evaluating the evidence base for digital mental health interventions

Social Media Literacy & Critical Engagement

Social media is not going away, and abstinence-based approaches are increasingly unrealistic. Instead, I advocate for social media literacy—helping adolescents and adults alike engage critically and intentionally with these platforms.

My Perspective

Social media literacy means understanding how these platforms are designed to capture attention, how algorithms shape what we see, and how to recognize manipulative or harmful content. It also means cultivating awareness of our own emotional responses and setting boundaries that protect wellbeing. This is a skill set that must be taught explicitly, not assumed.

Literacy Skills I Teach:

  • Recognizing algorithmic curation and filter bubbles
  • Identifying misinformation, clickbait, and emotional manipulation
  • Understanding the business model of attention economics
  • Developing healthy usage patterns and boundaries
  • Navigating social comparison and self-presentation online

Mental Health Stigma & Public Education

Despite progress, stigma remains a significant barrier to mental health care. I work to normalize conversations about mental health through public speaking, writing, and educational programs that emphasize common humanity and evidence-based understanding.

My Perspective

Stigma reduction requires both personal storytelling and systemic change. I believe in sharing clinical insights in accessible language, challenging misconceptions through education, and advocating for policies that improve access to care. Mental health challenges are part of the human experience, not moral failings or character flaws.

Stigma Reduction Strategies:

  • Public education campaigns that normalize help-seeking
  • Language matters: moving from "crazy" to clinically accurate terms
  • Highlighting stories of recovery and resilience
  • Training community leaders as mental health advocates
  • Advocating for insurance parity and access to affordable care
